Dear list:

I just found that after using xtlogit (re), the command "margins, dydx(*)" produce identical average marginal effects as the estimated coefficents. This is for both discrete and continuous explanatory variables. Using the same command following logit seems OK. Is this some kind of error on stat's side?

I am working with a pane data set and want to match my variables based on the company name. however, I also want them to be matched by year as well. I was attempting to use reclink2 to accomplish this but was unable to include the year as a conditional matching criteria. I also assume that it would make matches from other years i.e. 1998 and 1999 would still create a fuzzy match. Is there anyway that I can make they year a strict criterion and then match the fuzzy data? I would appreciate any help.

Dear All,
I'm trying to estimate a structural VAR model and see the impact of monetary policy shock. I know that ordering is important for the identification of structural shocks. In the ordering of variables I have ordered my monetary policy variable 3rd from the top something like this
Y=(y p i mr m hp mb) where y, p, mr, m, hp and mb are the other variables.
I have used the following codes to run my estimation. I'm not sure if I'm doing this correctly.

. svar dln_gdp dln_cpi irate mrate1 dln_mor dln_hp dln_mb, aeq(A) beq(B) lags(1/4)

Hey guys.

I've been an avid reader of this list for quite some time but I've never contributed in any way or form - I'll change that now (cynics would argue that I only want to participate now that I have a problem).

Okay, so a long version short. I have collected data from several classrooms about their teachers. So a class of 30 students have answered questions about 1 teacher. I've constructed 8 scales from the answers and I want to be able to show the teachers the average score on each of the 8 scales in one chart. I've found the "radar"-program and I've tried graph7, star but they aren't doing what I want them to. I basically want the 8 scores placed on each of the radars/starts lines and marked on the line where the score is. The ideal is to have a mark, the next best thing is a connected line between the lines in the radar/star. I've attached a picture with the basics of what I'm looking for (but this does not have the markings/connected lines). I think one of my problems is, that I have 8 variables (1 for each scale) that only contain the score when I use the mean.

The closest I've come is:

graph pie Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 Q5 Q6 Q7 Q8

Which is horrible, to say the least.

Thank you for your help!

Dear all colleges,

I have already a large-scale survey of basic health research. Providing set basic data that was collected through a national survey so we can use its result to arrange a health policy to the district/city level the survey had collected information from 258,366 households sampled and 987,205 household members sampled for measuring many public health indicators. The sampling design of survey was using "two stage sampling" The result of this design required special treatment in which process using conventional statistic by complex samples in SPSS or svyset in STATA to make it possible to utilize two stage sampling designs, in processing and analyzing the data set, the validity of analysis result can be optimized.
In case, the dataset that I have also already consist of variable "PSU, Weight, Inflate and Strata" According information above and sampling design. I would like to ask you some questions.

The first question.
The set-up of dataset with "svyset" in beginning the process. Which ones the better writing of the syntax and what different the result if I want prefer choose one of them like below

1st syntax svyset
svyset psu [pweight=inflate], strata(strata), vce(linearized), singleunit(missing)
pweight: inflate
VCE: linearized
Single unit: missing
Strata 1: strata
SU 1: psu
FPC 1: <zero>

or….

2nd syntax svyset
. svyset [pw=weight], strata(strata) psu(psu)
pweight: weight
VCE: linearized
Single unit: missing
Strata 1: strata
SU 1: psu
FPC 1: <zero>

Or
3rd syntax svyset
svyset [pweight = inflate],strata(strata)
pweight: inflate
VCE: linearized
Single unit: missing
Strata 1: strata
SU 1: <observations>
FPC 1: <zero>

The second question.
Even thought the Sampling of the survey design was using two stage sampling, using from svydescribe we only get only the data in one stages. what does the meaning?

. svydescribe

Survey: Describing stage 1 sampling units
pweight: inflate
VCE: linearized
Single unit: missing
Strata 1: strata
SU 1: <observations>
FPC 1: <zero>

Could you please give me advance advice.
Sincerely yours

Hi,

I am currently using a two-level random slope model, logistic regression. The reason I use multilevel is to control for a possible design effect. I am using xtmelogit, but I already tried glamm and xtlogit as well. I have data for three measurements. When running the same model on the first two measurements, I do not experience any problems. By contrast, for the third measurement, I do not seem to get an accurate estimation of the second level variance. Sd_cons is virtually zero, and the confidence interval is also odd: I get exactly 0 as a lower point, and a '.' as upper bound. The p-value indicating whether or not it is necessary to use a multilevel design gives exactly zero. Can anyone tell me why this is the case?
In a multilevel course based on MLWin I learned that in this case you should 'allow for negative variance'. Can anybody please tell me how I could do this with Stata?

thank you very much in advance!!

best regards,
Hanne

Dear Statalisters

Does anyone know whether a user-written program is currently available in stata to estimate a sample selection model for panel data (using fixed effects). There was some discussion on the subject in http://www.stata.com/statalist/archive/2005-04/msg00112.html from which I understand it was not implemented in 2005. Does anyone know whether this has changed? Or is anyone familiar with a program written in another statistical package (matlab, gauss etc).
Thank you very much for your help.
Dear Stata colleagues,

Thanks to Kit Baum, conindex is now available from SSC. This command computes a range of rank-dependent inequality indices, including the Gini coefficient, the concentration index, the generalized (Gini) concentration index, the modified concentration index, the Wagstaff and Erreygers normalised concentration indices for bounded variables, and the distributionally sensitive extended and symmetric concentration indices (and their generalized versions).

Hi all,

I have a question on Propensity Score Matching. I'm trying to evaluate the impact of migration on children's schooling. My data is cross-section and I do not have child-level data at time before migration occured. But I have data on household-level at time before migration occured. Therefore, I decided to match based on household-level data, since it is measured before participation into migration.

Since my outcome is at individual-level, there might be some individual characteristics that affect my outcome. Estimating the impact of migration by propensity score matching constructed based on household-level variables won't be enough. My question is, can I estimate the impact of migration using propensity score matching (covariates used are household-level) and also incorporate some individual-level variables?

I'm thinking of estimating such model:

Sij = Mj + Gj + Aij + Bij + e

For Sij = schooling of child i at household j
Mj = 1 for migrant household, 0 for household without migrant
Gj = propensity score for household j (the same for all kids at one household)
Aij = for example age of the child i
Bij = for example sex of the child i
and then since children in household are related, I'm gonna cluster the standard errors at household level.

Is that possible to do this with Propensity Score Matching? Could someone tell me how to do it in Stata?

I've read a lot of references using PSM, but none of it has additional variables to predict the ATT like in my problems.

Hi all,

I was hoping you could help me. I am trying to run a cross random effects model in Stata 13.
But so far, I have not been able to pass from the error message "initial values not feasible" .
I have tried to change the start values to the 4 possible options (zero, iv, constantonly and fixedonly), I have also tried to change the startgrid option (although I am sure what that is) and finally I tried running a simpler model to get some initial values and then use them as initial estimates for a more complex model. But I still cannot fix the problem.
This is the code I have used to get initial estimates from a simpler model:

*Obtain initial values from a simpler model
ologit happy female c.age##c.age
mat x=e(b)
meologit happy female c.age##c.age|| coh5: || year: , from (x)

Can someone please help me? Are there any other options to solve this? Also, I read that using the command evaltype(gf0) might help, but what does that mean?

Thanks!

Hello everyone,

I am working on cleaning large panel data set. I have done some cleaning and now have a list of unique company names. However, there are still some inconsistencies in the spelling of company names that lead to separate cases which I would like to match and consolidate under the same name/id.

I initially tried using reclink in order to match the data to itself. However, when doing this, reclink gives a set of perfect matches (each entry matches perfectly with itself). What I would really like to do is to look for the second-best/non-perfect matches in order to identify misspelled duplicates. To my knowledge, reclink doesn't have an option for ignoring the perfect matches.

Is there a way to do this with reclink? Or is there another method that would work better?

Dear Statalisters,

What I intend to do is to run multiple regressions and eventually save
all the results via outreg2 in an excel file.

To do so, the do File contains the following outreg2 code (regression
and estimates store code ommited)
regresssion 1
outreg2 [*] using myfile , replace sideway bdec(3) groupvar(Group1
ebit5yr beta beta_sqr logmarketcap propertyrights regulation
tcr5hat_sqr Group2 debtofassets

The first regression uses outreg "replace" option to start a new/clean
outreg2 reporting table, the last one the "excel" option to generate
the .csv file

However, I frequently receive the error "file myfile.txt could not be
openend" r(603).
It appears that the error occurs kind of random and I am not able to
reproduce it all the time. I already tryied changing the working
directory, using the full path specification for the file, deleting
all the files from the working directory. I did not change any

Hello Statalist,

When I run a program based on the " sbe32 package" instructions
I get the error message "invalid file specification" following the "outbrk"
I'd very much appreciate any suggestions.

I apologize if this has been answered before but I could not find the
solution in the archives. When I perform 1-1 matching using psmatch2,
several new variables are added to my dataset. Among these are _id, which is
a unique identifier for each observation, and _n1, which identifies the _id
for the observation in the matched pair. Id like to be able to define a new
variable that uniquely identifies each matched pair. In other words if there
are 100 observations making 50 matched pairs, there are 100 unique values of
_id and 100 unique values of _n1. Id like a variable with 50 unique values,
one for each matched pair. Stata doesnt appear to create this variable.
Having this variable would enable me to conduct stratified analyses
(stratifying on matched pairs) outside of what is provided by psmatch2.
Given _id and _n1 there is probably a way to do this but it is beyond my
skill set. Id appreciate if there are any ideas out there as to how to go
about defining this variable.

Thanks very much

Dear Statalist,

The hypothesis is non-inferiority with a margin of 12%.

I use

Hi.
I'm a bit lost with this.
I try to write the label for the varx.
But in some of the databases the var label exist and in others doesn't.
I must make clear that the variable and the label share the same name.

cd C:\Users\JC\Bases\Stata\
local filelist: dir . files "*.dta"
foreach file of local filelist {
use "`file'", clear
label drop varx
label define varx 1 "text1" 15 "text15"
label values varx varx
save "`file'", replace
}

The exposed code does run flawless until i encounter a database with the varx not having a label. It stops my code and it says

value label varx not found
So, summarising:
Whether there is or not a label for the varx, i just want that from now on the label for the mentioned variable be as i declare in the loop and save the database.
Thanks for your replies and time.
Hi
I need to create a loop. The issue is i have 2 variables, X and Y. And both are strings.
So, how do i create a matrix with the form
J(lengthX, lengthY, .)
Besides, i need that the names of the rows and columns be according to the strings from X and Y.
Using and example.
The labels of X are 01 05 06 07 08 09 and Y are 01 02 03 04 05 06 08.
So, i would need to create a matrix with 6 rows and 7 columns, naming the rows
01, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09 and the columns 01,02,03,04,05,06,08.
I know how to filled that matrix, but i have no idea declaring the number of rows or columns for the matrix. Also with the names of each one.
Using the option destring doesn't suite me because i have labels as 011 and others as 11 which are completely different.
Thanks for your time and interest.
Really.

tag:statalist.1588530.n2.nabble.com,2006:post-3834123st: AW: Graph: Colouring table cells based on conditions or data distribution2009-10-16T00:33:53Z2009-10-16T00:33:53ZStefan.Gawrich
Hi Statalisters,

many of you may know this feature from MS Excel (from Version 2007 on).
It's more or less a "choropleth map" for data tables (cell colour
depends on cell value relative to the table distribution or on
conditions).
(see:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb428945%28office.11%29.aspx)

In my work I often have to display both a table (to pick data from) and
a graph (for visual impression) to users and I'm constantly trying to
combine both. Colouring tables is one way to do this if rules/conditions
are user-defineable.

I thought about setting up a coloured twoway table in Stata but that
doesn't seem to be easy:

Stata's results window doesn't allow for fancy tricks so the table must
be in a graph.

Spmap by Maurizio Pisati has all colouring options I need and can be set
up with rectangular polygons and polygon centroids for labeling.
But it's not written for that purpose, so it's difficult to set up:
- a n*m polygon-coordinates dataset for each table must be created
- linkage of table cells to polygons
- handling of missing values and category "missing"
- use of value labels
- display of row and/or column totals (yes/no)
- ...

I already started to produce some coloured tables with spmap but these
are only first tests.
I'm curious if there is any other graph framework available in Stata
which also may be suitable for this purpose.

Best wishes
Stefan Gawrich

Hi
I hope you can help me.
I need to export multiple tables of this kind:

table varx1 sex education [iweight = fexp], c(mean ing_t_p) center row col format(%9,0fc)

I've tried with tabout, but i didn't manage very well.
The option of using the log file didn't work well.
I cut my tables when i tried to do the common copy/paste process.
Do you know of some way to perform the described task but not slicing the table and not doing major adjustment as "text to columns" in excel?
I did know (in fact, i use it quite often) tabout, but the three-way table isn't implemented yet.
Thanks for your interest and time.
Really.

Hi
I hope you will understand my problem.
I wrote this code

matrix A=J(17,8,0)
forval i=1/17 {
forval j=0/7 {

}
}
The matrix A has 17 rows and 8 columns because branch starts from 1 to 17 and class from 0 to 8.
So, i'm storing the r(sum_w) for every match.
But know i need to expand the
quietly summarize var8 if branch== `i' & class== `j' [iw=expansion]
to
quietly summarize var8 if branch== `i' & class== `j' area=`iregion' [iw=expansion]
with area, a variable designing areas in numbers that goes from 1 to 15.
But i don't know how to store the values in the matrix.
I thought of generating 15 matrices names, and inserting a forval iregion=1/15, but i didn't work.
Can you guide me on this?

Dear all,

According to the code from the following post in this forum:

When I replace -corr- with -pwcorr-,-list- I get the following error after using: mata: mataRS[1,2] = mataS[2,1]

<istmt>: 3301 subscript invalid" for the command

Is there a "smart" way to solve this? (btw, I am working with TeXMaker, so it would be great if the output can be transferred for Latex.)

Good afternoon,

i have a dataset for the following regression, for example : dummy_age=set of dummy_characteristics + economic variables (GDP, pop, unemployment).

The dataset is as following:

firm_id / entry_year / others
1 / 2008
2 /2006
3 / 1999
4 / 2006

entry year is the year which the firm was founded and its among 1986 and 2009. So these values are repeated over the sample.

My first step was joining the economic variables to the base data, my merging it. The problem here is that Gdp values are repeated because entry years are also repeated.

When i try to declare the dataset to be panel data (xtset firmid year) i get the result "repeated time values within panel". I also tried to make a regression but stata says that there's no observations.

Can you help me solving this problem?

Hi

I print the following result with this loop in excel
cd C:\Users\JC\Bases\Stata

foreach file of local filelist {

But the loop involves over 50 files, so i need to export in the table the name of the database.
Do you know how to do this?
I'm sorry if i didn't exposed my case clearly.
Thanks for your comments and time.
